The Mind, Once Stretched with New Ideas, Never Returns to Its Original Size
Historically, conventional medical underwriters have had difficulty conceptualizing effective scope and benefit design for chiropractic. In lieu of having an evidenced-based model of best practices, insurance underwriters have put chiropractic benefits into a “box”. This has been accomplished by arbitrarily limiting access, either in dollars or number of visits.
As an example, pre-authorization has been used unsuccessfully for years. We believe this strategy has generated more ill will and liability than savings, as it does not take into consideration the effectiveness of the care rendered.
Although these strategies may provide some short-term savings, they do nothing to address the quality of care provided, regardless of who is paying, and may, in fact, contribute to higher overall medical expenses for the plan and lower member satisfaction.
