The AACP and AMI view the credentialing program as an important step in the recognition and promotion of chiropractic as a form of primary care. They feel successfully credentialed practitioners will distinguish themselves as the "elite of the chiropractic profession."

Other practitioners such as doctors of osteopathy, who, were once viewed with skepticism have gained public acceptance and a substantial increase in practice rights in the past few decades. AMI and the AACP hope to accomplish the same benefits for doctors of chiropractic with the establishment of uniform National Standards equal to their MD counterparts.

This relationship marks the first time a national chiropractic organization will require its members to demonstrate credentialing standards that equal their conventional Western-trained MD counterparts.

The AACP was founded in 1999 by a nationwide group of chiropractic primary care physicians and two chiropractic medical schools.
